The Grant County Board of Education has released a positive update on their annual student test results, with the local area outperforming the state average in both math and English.

In a decisive move addressing the ongoing opioid crisis, the Grant County Commission this week voted to formally join both current and future opioid-related legal actions — including West Virginia’s newly launched lawsuit against pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs). Express Scripts, one of the nation’s largest PBMs, has been named as a key defendant in the case.

At the most recent Petersburg City Council meeting, Joshua Clayton addressed the zoning challenges he has encountered in his effort to open a sober living home for men within the city limits. He is interested in a rent-to-own property at 36 Water Street in Petersburg.

 

State Police and Sheriff’s Deputies collaborate in case involving stolen truck and property damage

A local man is facing multiple felony charges following a string of vehicle-related incidents occurring between July 11 and July 12, according to police reports filed by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office and the West Virginia State Police.
The initial incident occurred on the evening of July 11, when Deputy T. Feaster of the Grant County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of property destruction and an attempted vehicle theft at a residence on Big Run Road, located just off Jordan Run in Grant County.

 

Looking back on Petersburg’s winning seasons in 1975 and 1980, Coach Ron Stephens was asked by the paper what he believed the secret to those successful years of high school football was. He replied, “The secret was simple: dedication.
Those kids never questioned — they just worked hard and played as one.” He recalled, “We played as a team, and as a result, we won a lot of games.”
Stephens expressed admiration for his former players’ lives off the field and the successes they have achieved. He stated “I love the people in this area and I wish them the very best...it’s like coming home.”

September 5, the Wyoming East Warriors endured an eight hour round trip from New Richmond, W.Va to meet the Vikings in Petersburg. The Viking Memorial Field home bleachers were packed and the fans on the sidelines were in large number also.
Alumni Night began with the Viking Marching Band playing the National Anthem and mini-Vikings and the cheerleaders leading fans in the Viking War Chant. Captains for the evening were Colson Bobo, Logan Bachman, Lukas Wolford and Alex Halterman.

The opening Viking game took place on Viking Memorial Field in Petersburg August 29, as they hosted the Berkeley Springs Indians. In the last four years 2021-2024 the Vikings have scalped these Indians as they proclaimed wins all four years, mostly big wins.
Coach Shane Shockey begins his second year as head coach. Shockey arrived in 2024 as the Viking Football Coach bringing 24 years of experience.
