Petersburg High School’s girls’ basketball team dropped a home contest last Tuesday to Keyser, one of the top teams in West Virginia Class AAA. For two quarters the Lady Vikings outscored the Golden Tornado, but Keyser controlled the other two periods on their way to a 54–37 victory.
Keyser jumped out to an 18–4 lead after the first quarter. Petersburg settled in during the second frame, outscoring the Golden Tornado 14–6 to cut the deficit to six, trailing 24–18 at halftime.
Keyser came out of the break showing why they are among the state’s elite, scoring 20 third-quarter points while holding Petersburg to just three.
The Lady Vikings regrouped in the fourth quarter, scoring 16 points and holding Keyser to 10, but the early damage proved too much as Keyser secured the 54–37 win.
Miley Tingler led Petersburg with nine points. Sis Cole added seven, while Shyane Tawney contributed six points and seven rebounds.

The Union girls basketball team picked up its first win of the season Wednesday night, defeating East Hardy 36–28 in a low-scoring matchup.
The Tigers avenged a narrow 29–27 loss to the Cougars from their January meeting, turning in their strongest offensive performance of the year. Union set the tone early and maintained control throughout the contest, holding East Hardy below its season scoring average.
Union’s defense limited the Cougars to 28 points while the Tigers continued to apply pressure on both ends of the floor. The victory marked a milestone moment for Union, snapping a long stretch without a win and providing a boost of confidence as the team moves forward. The win improved Union’s record to 1–9 on the season.

Union’s defense set the tone Saturday afternoon as the Tigers earned a 44–29 non-conference victory over Highland (Va.) at home.
In a game played largely in the half court, Union controlled the tempo and limited Highland’s scoring opportunities from start to finish. The Rams struggled to find consistency on the offensive end, finishing well below their season scoring average, while Union methodically built and maintained separation.
The Tigers did not rely on any extended scoring runs, instead stringing together solid defensive possessions and efficient trips down the floor. Union held Highland to just 29 points on the afternoon, never allowing the visitors to gain momentum.
Corbin Streets anchored the effort with a dominant all-around performance. The senior shot 66 percent from the floor, finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double, and made his presence felt defensively with six blocks and two steals.
Following the game, head coach Ward cited Streets’ impact on both ends of the court, noting that his rebounding, rim protection, and efficiency were key factors in Union’s ability to control the game.
Union’s defensive consistency proved to be the difference, as the Tigers closed out the contest without allowing a late push and secured a solid home win.
