Levy funding and strong community support have led to signifi cant improvements in student access, instrument quality, and overall growth for the Petersburg High School and middle school band programs. Band Director Faith Smith stated that recent levy funding enabled the program to invest in much-needed repairs and equipment, ensuring more students can participate regardless of fi nancial circumstances.“We were approved for $15,000 a year for the next several years, specifi cally for instruments and repairs,” Smith said. “That money has made such a difference.”

Petersburg High School’s girls’ basketball team dropped a home contest last Tuesday to Keyser, one of the top teams in West Virginia Class AAA. For two quarters the Lady Vikings outscored the Golden Tornado, but Keyser controlled the other two periods on their way to a 54–37 victory.

Keyser jumped out to an 18–4 lead after the first quarter. Petersburg settled in during the second frame, outscoring the Golden Tornado 14–6 to cut the deficit to six, trailing 24–18 at halftime.

Keyser came out of the break showing why they are among the state’s elite, scoring 20 third-quarter points while holding Petersburg to just three.

The Lady Vikings regrouped in the fourth quarter, scoring 16 points and holding Keyser to 10, but the early damage proved too much as Keyser secured the 54–37 win.

Miley Tingler led Petersburg with nine points. Sis Cole added seven, while Shyane Tawney contributed six points and seven rebounds.

2/6/26 vs. Hampshire

Petersburg bounced back Friday night, defeating Hampshire 52–38 on George B. Halterman Memorial Court. The Lady Vikings never trailed in the contest.

Petersburg opened the game on a 10–1 run and led 18–6 after one quarter, with Miley Tingler scoring seven first-quarter points.

The Lady Vikings shot 50% from the floor in the second quarter. Sis Cole scored six points in the period to help Petersburg build a 34–17 halftime lead.

Defense took center stage in the third quarter as Hampshire forced seven Petersburg turnovers. Despite that, the Lady Vikings extended their lead to 41–25 after three quarters. Shyane Tawney scored four points in the frame.

Petersburg managed just one field goal in the fourth quarter but went to the free-throw line 16 times, converting eight to score 11 points and secure the win.

Tingler led all scorers with 15 points and added six rebounds. Tawney and Karlie DiBenedetto each scored 10 points, with Tawney also pulling down five rebounds. Ella Markwell added seven points and four rebounds, while Sis Cole finished with six points and six rebounds.

2/7/26 vs. Berkeley Springs

Petersburg used a dominant second quarter to cruise to a 66–23 win over Berkeley Springs Saturday afternoon at Petersburg High School.

The Lady Vikings led 16–10 after the opening quarter before exploding for 22 points in the second period while limiting the Indians to just two.

Petersburg continued to pull away in the second half, outscoring Berkeley Springs 13–7 in the third quarter and 15–4 in the fourth.

Shyane Tawney led Petersburg with 15 points. Ayden Mayfield added 12 points. Miley Tingler scored eight points and dished out five assists, while Sis Cole contributed eight points, six rebounds, and three assists.
