Toys for Happiness collects over 1,000 gifts for local kids

The annual Toys for Happiness toy drive is celebrating a happy success after collecting 1,000 toys that will be distributed to families in need throughout the community. Toys for Happiness is a local collaboration between multiple Grant County groups and businesses that sends an “Elf” (known throughout the rest of the year as Denver Riggleman) onto the roof of Petersburg Electronics and he stubbornly refuses to come down until their goal is hit.
This year, the group way exceeded their 650 toy goal, hitting around 1,000. The toys will be gifted to families who applied for assistance this Christmas. For those still interested in contributing to the Toys for Happiness, donations will still be accepted this coming week at the Press offi ce

City approved the installation of a speed bump on Bryan Street

The Petersburg City Council met last week and approved a request to install a speed bump on Bryan Street. Community members Phyllis and Allen Eckert (who live on Bryan Street) explained that the need for a speed bump became clear on Halloween, when a frightening incident occurred with a speeding vehicle and a group of trick-or-treaters crossing the residential street. Eckert brought with them a petition containing signatures from nearly everyone on the street, with the only exception agreeing that the speed bump was necessary but had issues with how the bump on Mountain View Street.

Grant County man and two others sentenced to over a year in prison for selling methamphetamine

A Petersburg man was among three people sentenced last week in federal court for drug trafficking in North Central West Virginia. According to an announcement by United States Attorney Matthew L. Harvey announced, Jacob Wilson, 29, of Beverly, Lawrence Lower, 36, of Petersburg and Michael Wayne Miller, 55, of Wardensville will be serving prison time on drug charges.

Vikings kick off wrestling season with strong showings at Hedgesville tournament

The weather is turning cold, the snow is flying, and gyms all across the state are being fi lled with wrestling mats wall-to-wall. Wrestling season is back and your Petersburg Vikings began the season this past weekend with a 2-day trip to Hedgesville. The tournament was a great early test and featured teams from West Virginia and Virginia.
Competing for the Vikings this weekend was Kaitlin Booth (120 lb.), Carter Thompson (120 lb.), Josh Lahman (126 lb.), Jaxon Kile (132 lb.), Alina Carlon (132 lb.), Colson Bobo (138 lb.), Gage Pennington (144 lb.), Ethan Stump (157 lb.), Aiden Coakley (157 lb.), Garrett Dolly (165 lb.), Alex Halterman (175 lb.), Landon Wratchford (190 lb.), and Logan Bachman (215 lb.).

- The Petersburg High School Band and Chorus will be presenting their Christmas concert on Friday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Landes Arts Center.
- Christmas caroling will be held at the Petersburg Downtown Pavilion on on Virginia Ave., on Dec. 14 at 5 p.m.
- West Virginia Theater East will present “Miracle on 34th Street” on Dec. 19-20 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. at the Landes Arts Center.
